This concert brings together some of the most uplifting and iconic music in the orchestral tradition — a celebration of melody, pride and pure musical enjoyment in true Last Night of the Proms style.

We begin in the rich sound world of Edward Elgar, whose noble and heartfelt music has long been intertwined with British musical identity. From stirring ceremonial themes to moments of deep warmth and reflection, Elgar’s voice embodies both grandeur and humanity.

The programme also pays tribute to Sir Hubert Parry, whose music, filled with glowing harmonies and powerful choral style, helped define a national musical renaissance. His works radiate dignity, hope and a steadfast spirit, capturing the character of a nation in song.

Alongside these English masters, we enjoy the light-footed charm of Eric Coates, a composer of irresistible melodies and radiant orchestral colour. His music evokes summer breezes, elegant dances and a nostalgic glow, a perfect fit for an evening outdoors.

Balancing this is the sweeping drama and heartfelt romance of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, whose passionate themes and emotional intensity have made him one of the most beloved composers in the world. From soaring strings to glittering orchestral climaxes, his music brings depth and brilliance to the programme.

Symphony Sunday - Sibelius & Brahms

Join Southampton Concert Orchestra and Paul Ingram in an afternoon of symphonic beauty.

This afternoon concert brings together two symphonies that glow with quiet confidence and enduring strength. Symphonic works in which great composers refine their voices and reveal the full breadth of their mastery.

Sibelius’s Symphony No. 3 opens the afternoon with music of clarity and poise. Leaner and more transparent than his earlier symphonies, the Third marks a turning point in Sibelius’ style. Its opening movement moves with buoyant energy and clean architectural lines, while the Andantino offers stillness. It's music that seems to breathe with the quiet radiance of northern light. In the finale, Sibelius performs one of his most remarkable feats: playful fragments gradually coalesce into a noble, hymn-like conclusion, forged with inevitability and strength. It is a symphony that speaks softly.

After the interval comes the warmth of Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, a work often celebrated for its pastoral glow and generous spirit. From its serene opening in the lower strings to its exuberant, sunlit finale, Brahms’ Second radiates lyricism and joy. Yet beneath its warmth lies intricate craftsmanship: rich harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and a profound emotional undercurrent. The slow movement sings with introspective depth, the scherzo dances with rustic charm, and the triumphant finale crowns the symphony with radiant brilliance.

Together, these works create a journey from the landscapes of Finland to the golden serenity of Austria. In different voices but shared mastery, Sibelius and Brahms offer music that is both intimate and monumental.

Bring your picnic, champagne, blankets and chairs to this open-air “Last Night of the Proms” classical concert.

The renowned Southampton Concert Orchestra, conducted by Paul Ingram, will be performing popular classics and all the usual Last Night of the Proms favourites, including Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia.

Snacks for sale and on-site bar selling soft drinks, wines, beers and cocktails.

Please note for environmental reasons there will not be a firework display.
